One of the classic signs of beauty is having high cheekbones. Actress Katherine Hepburn and model Christy Turlington are good examples of women with high cheekbones.
However, not everyone is born with this feature. For these people there is an operation called a cheekbone augmentation.

Anyone with lower cheekbones than they wish to have. The operation is also performed on men, to correct flatness in the mid face. It is often combined with ohter cosmetic procedures such as a facelift or chin augmentation.

The procedure can be performed using either a general or a local anesthetic, depending on the preferences of both the patient and the surgeon. The surgeon makes a small incision inside the mouth, in the crease above the upper lip. An implant that resembles the natural cheekbone is placed over the natural cheekbone and then secured. This way the projection of the cheekbone is increased. The incision will be sutured closed.

Besides the risks that exist in any surgical procedure, only minor complications might occur. In very rare circumstances the implant has to be removed due to unexpected problems. This is a very simple procedure. Ther might be some numbness in the face caused by the surgery.
